The Sudden Surge Explained: Sony’s PS5 Consoles Sold 50 Million Units
Sony has now announced that it has sold more than 50 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide. The PS5 was first released on November 12, 2020, and now it’s been a little over three full years since the console was released.
This milestone is a significant achievement for the Japanese gaming giant as it seeks to maintain its lead against competitors like Xbox in the future. Most of the achievement is due to the recently increased inventory that Sony has been able to produce. In fact, the company has released a new updated slimmer model that is slightly smaller than the original console.
For the uninitiated, during the console’s previous life, the PS5 was in short supply due to a global semiconductor shortage that prevented the supply chain from functioning properly. This highlights how quickly Sony managed to sell around 10 million units since July when they revealed that the PS5 had sold 40 million units.
In addition to the steady availability of inventory, Sony has released several flagship titles over the past three years, including the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a direct sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Other notable releases include God of War Ragnarok, Demon’s Souls, Returnal, and third-party exclusives like Final Fantasy XVI. It’s safe to say that this robust and diverse game library has contributed to increased sales in the PlayStation camp, which has enabled sales of Xbox Series X|S consoles.
“We’re grateful to all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re excited that this will be the first holiday season since launch when we’ll have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so everyone who wants to get one can get one,” said Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
